cracked some ribs! :(

Was roughhousing with a bro this weekend, and cracked some ribs!
Man oh man this hurts sooo much! More so than when I broke a collarbone ... I really am gaining new appreciation for how your core is related to EVERYTHING you do!

Anyone know what the healing timeline is for something like this?

Anything to do besides ace bandage and trying not to strain it further?

keep breathing, deep breaths as you can manage! i was told it is best not to wrap the ribs, but can't remember why;( i found it took longer to heal my 2 crack ribs then my 5 very badly broken ribs...damn horses! for me that it it was about 6 months for my broken ribs, before the ribs weren't tender at all

Good luck!

weeks   Sorry about that.  I cracked 2 ribs when I was 18 and I still remember trying to breathe and every breath was excruciating.

Heal quickly and take it easy!

you big doofus!!

My first tip: don't do anything that causes bad pain,

My second tip: listen to your mother when she says - if you don't stop that someone is going to get hurt, and even if she isn't there, pretend she is.

6-8 weeks minimum IF you don't try to do anything silly and reinjure yourself. Sorry dude that really sucks. You are in great shape, just give yourself time to heal.

Good rule of thumb is that all broken bones take about 6 weeks to heal if you are fit and healthy. The older, more out of shape you get, the longer the recovery.

Not even worth going to a hospital for broken ribs, there is nothing they do really, unless you are concerned about the ribs puncturing an organ.

Bet you got an X-ray, expensive bill and maybe some tape and expensive pain pills.

Now it is time to relax, stop exercising for a while and concentrate on the nutrition aspect. Since you will be having less on the "energy/calories out" side of the equation, you may actually have to scale back your food intake a bit to compensate.

owie kazowie batman! Heal fast!!

Best not to wrap broken ribs...as much as it hurts, it is better for your lungs to allow the chest wall to keep moving normally.  So the doc told my DH when he broke his ribs.

Bark less. WAG MORE.

Nah, good thing about this happening on a camping trip --- just had to tough it out. Wasn't even 'til Day 2 my friend remembered he had some Aleve!

And thanks all, I'll let it heal as best I can.

Jared my DH had some rib issues in May not sure if they were bruised or broken. He wore a rib wrap just during his workouts. Be sure to take deep breaths often as you don't want the lungs to fill up with fluid. The first 2 weeks were brutal. It was a total of about 4 weeks before he had little pain. Still sensitve today.

Well shoot, emailed Ross Enamait at www.rosstraining.com and here's what he had to say:
You could be looking at 6 months for recovery. Cracked ribs take a long time to heal. Rest is the best weapon unfortunately. You can't afford to do anything that damages the ribs further (or the lungs, as it could be quite dangerous).

As for exercise, take time to rest fully first. If you begin to attempt movement/exercise, you need to be VERY careful and start very slow. If you notice any pain, stop immediately and move on to something else. This isn't the time to be making new gains. Rest/healing must be the primary concern. Everything else is secondary. You'll have plenty of time to bounce back once the injury has healed.

I realize that it is frustrating, as I dealt with plenty of hand injuries as a young fighter. I was always impatient and rushed back to action. That's the reason I had to transition to coaching. My injuries got the best of me. Don't make the same mistake. Be patient and come back stronger once you have healed. Don't look for a shortcut.

Best of luck, Ross

ack!

Sorry to hear it... i had a cracked rib earlier this year.  Six to eight weeks healing time but can take longer.  Don't lay on / put pressure on the cracked rib (was hard for me since i sleep on it usually).  First week or two is the worst... after that it's more just annoying.  It really sucks.

No real treatment for it other than waiting it out and not putting pressure on it and bed rest for the first couple weeks.  Getting up from lieing position is the worst!
